PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This specialty preparation is offered as an option for students pursuing full time studies in the Master's degree program in Speech-Language Pathology at Nazareth College of Rochester. The Master's degree plus specialization will require six consecutive semesters of study (including two summers).

Students will receive special training in:

  • The cultural, social and educational issues facing deaf and hard-of-hearing children and their families
  • Assessment of spoken language and literacy abilities of deaf and hard-of-hearing children
  • Intervention strategies for spoken language and literacy, including the use of technology
  • ASL, Cued speech, and other means of communication
  • These courses are all offered at Nazareth College with the exception of the cochlear implant course which is offered at NTID. In addition, information about cochlear implant technology and use will be extensively addressed throughout the curriculum. Clinical practicum will provide sufficient opportunities to work with individuals who use cochlear implants. Students will be albe to work in the Spoken Language Learning and Practice Lab their first year in the program and will have ample opportunity to work with Deaf and hard-of-hearing students at NTID.

    PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

    The following courses are required:

    A. 4 courses specifically focused on deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals

  • Developmental Issues and Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Learners
  • Listening and Spoken Language I: Infants and Toddlers
  • Listening and Spoken Language II: Transition to School and Emergent Literacy
  • Cochlear Implants: Technology and Use
  • B. 3 courses that provide critical competencies and have specific components related to children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing

  • Early Intervention
  • Educational Audiology
  • Contemporary Issues and Interprofessional Practice
  • Research Methods
  • In addition, 75 of the required hours of clinical practicum must focus on assessment and intervention with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

    TUITION ASSISTANCE

    A personnel preparation grant from the U.S. Department of Education provides financial aid for students accepted into the specialty program. Approximately $25,000 in tuition assistance and stipends are provided for the two years of training.

    APPLICATION PROCESS

    Application and acceptance to Nazareth’s graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology is required. A supplementary application to the specialty program is also required.
