Call for Papers

Goal of Symposium

The Symposium will disseminate information relative to current innovation and future developments in the use of instructional technology and educational media to support the teaching/learning process.  It will provide a forum for the presentation of current state-of-the-art practice and research for educators of the deaf and hard of hearing at levels ranging from pre-school through postsecondary, in settings both self-contained and inclusive.

Program

The program will feature plenary addresses, concurrent formal presentation sessions, poster sessions, and participant discussion groups to help formulate recommendations regarding future directions for the application of instructional technologies throughout deaf education.

Call for Papers

Presentations will be of two kinds: formal and poster.  Each presentation should address one or more of the four major Program Strands.  Each presentation should have a practical implication either for direct instruction or in support of educational services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students.  Where feasible, demonstrations of technology applications are encouraged.

Formal presentations should be no longer than 30 minutes.  An additional 10 minutes will be reserved for questions and comments.  Four formal sessions are planned to occur simultaneously.

Poster presentations provide an opportunity to interact directly with other participants and to demonstrate innovative applications of educational technologies used to support deaf and hard-of-hearing learners.

Persons interested in making either a formal or poster presentation should complete and return the attached Presentation Proposal Form.  A 200-word presentation summary will be used for selection purposes.  Abstracts of all accepted presentations will be posted on the Symposium Web site.

English is the official language of the Symposium.  Sign language interpreting and real-time captioning will be provided for all plenary and formal presentation sessions.

Authors of accepted papers (either formal presentation or poster session) are expected to write and submit a paper for inclusion on the Symposium Web site.  These papers assure the wide dissemination of the topics presented at the Symposium and additionally assist the sign language interpreters and real-time captioning specialists in preparing to support scheduled presentations.  See specific requirements for preparing papers below.

Submitting a Proposal

There are three ways to submit a proposal.  The Proposal Form is available at the Symposium Web site (/ntid/vp/techsym/).

1.              Mail or fax a paper proposal.  Type or write the proposal on the attached form.  The Adobe Acrobat or Rich Text Format (RTF) files available on the Symposium Web site can be used to generate paper copies of the Proposal Form.

2.              Mail a 3.5 inch floppy diskette that contains a proposal of either Text or Rich Text Format (RTF).

3.              Attach a Text or Rich Text Format (RTF) file of your proposal to an email message to techsym@rit.edu.

If you are submitting more than one proposal, submit each proposal separately.  Include the coordinating presenteržs name and title of proposal in either the body of the email or the diskette label.  Keep a copy of your proposal.  You will receive confirmation from the Symposium office that your proposal arrived successfully.  If you donžt receive confirmation within seven working days, contact the Symposium Chair.

March 14, 2005                 Notification of Acceptance

May 13, 2005                    Paper must be submitted to Symposium Chair

Selection Process

A blind review process will be used to review and select proposals.  Three readers will review each proposal and submit recommendations and comments to the Program Chair.  The following criteria will be used in rating proposals:

Content:        Does the proposal indicate either state-of-the-art application of technology to instruction or original research?  Is relevance to the support of deaf/hard-of-hearing learners clearly communicated?

Form:           Are the purpose and intended audience of the presentation clearly communicated?

Author Agreement

Submitted presentations should not be from previously published or presented papers.  All presenters are expected to register for and attend the Symposium and present at the Symposium at the scheduled time.  Authors additionally agree to submit a copy of their paper for inclusion in the Symposium Proceedings, which will be published on the Symposium Web site (and possibly in future print and non-printed documents that will be disseminated freely to interested parties).  It is also understood that by agreeing to present at the Symposium, authors have given their permission to be recorded and that their image may be used in the Symposium Proceedings and other promotional materials.

Submitting a Paper
