It can be done. \par And the presenter here is Valorie Smith-Pethybridge from Miami\_Dade College, and the two interpreters today are Lisa MINARD and Debra McCowski. So I guess we're ready to go ahead. \par >> V. SMITH-PETHYBRIDGE: Good afternoon. OK, thanks, Mike. This presentation is on real\_time captioning, and I want to begin by saying that I'm a sign language interpreter by trade and got into real\_time captioning because of a large population of oral deaf students that we had at our college, and we needed to address the access issue of that population. \par In doing so, we investigated C\_print captioning system, and all of our interpreters are currently trained as K. print captionists\~\_\_ C\_ print captionists. So I do have to preface this entire presentation by saying that we do use blended services, so that the C\_print captions is offered to students who sign, if they choose, for certain classes, and we combine that wit h interpreting if they should need voicing or if they would like part of the class captioned and part of the class interpreted, that kind of thing. \par }\pard \ltrpar\ql \fi432\li0\ri0\sl285\slmult0\nowidctlpar\faauto\rin0\lin0\itap0\pararsid10449256 {\rtlch\fcs1 \af2\afs26 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs26\insrsid10449256 In math and science classes, we were having really challenges is providing real\_ time captioning. Those of you who\~\_\_ I don't know the extent of your familiarity with the real\_ time captioning systems, but if you are unfamiliar with it, it's very difficult, if not impossible, at times to caption equations, symbols, Greek letters that pop up in science, engineer, mathematics, or a computer science course. \par }\pard \ltrpar\ql \fi432\li0\ri0\sl285\slmult0\nowidctlpar\faauto\rin0\lin0\itap0\pararsid10449256 {\rtlch\fcs1 \af2\afs26 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs26\insrsid10449256 With these challenges, the group of our captionists got together for regular meetings and tried to come up with techniques to overcome some of those challenges. We wanted to make the classes as accessible as po ssible, but we were realizing the limitations of real\_time captioning. \par For example, now, you can see\~\_\_ let me make that a little better. Pi squared times three plus parentheses, it loses much in the translation. Therefore, we looked for alternatives to providing equations and graphs and visuals into our captioning. This is what we came up with. \par }\pard\plain \ltrpar\s15\ql \fi432\li0\ri0\sl285\slmult0\nowidctlpar\faauto\rin0\lin0\itap0\pararsid10449256 \rtlch\fcs1 \af2\afs24\alang1025 \ltrch\fcs0 \f2\fs24\lang1033\langfe1033\cgrid\langnp1033\langfenp1033 {\rtlch\fcs1 \af2\afs26 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs26\insrsid10449256 We changed our font choice, and we started using Arial unicode, because it offered a much larger range of symbols that we could incorporate into this\~\_\_ into our captioning. \par }\pard\plain \ltrpar\ql \fi432\li0\ri0\sl285\slmult0\nowidctlpar\faauto\rin0\lin0\itap0\pararsid10449256 \rtlch\fcs1 \af2\afs24\alang1025 \ltrch\fcs0 \f2\fs24\lang1033\langfe1033\cgrid\langnp1033\langfenp1033 {\rtlch\fcs1 \af2\afs26 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs26\insrsid10449256 The next adjustment we made was for some classes we went back to using a word document linked to the old instant text program, which was the very first C\_ Print captioning program that was developed. With that, we then had the advantages of using many more symbols. Although, it is possible to put symbols into the C\_Print captioning, and I'll show you how to do that. \par }\pard \ltrpar\ql \fi432\li0\ri0\sl285\slmult0\nowidctlpar\faauto\rin0\lin0\itap0\pararsid10449256 {\rtlch\fcs1 \af2\afs26 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs26\insrsid10449256 C\_ Print Pro we were using Arial unicode, and you have to make sure that the student's laptop is also set on Arial unicode or their symbols won't show up. So it does take a little bit of student training in the process, you know, that they have to leave\~\_ \_ they don't have as many choices, and the fonts that they use, they are sometimes used to. \par }\pard \ltrpar\ql \fi432\li0\ri0\sl285\slmult0\nowidctlpar\faauto\rin0\lin0\itap0\pararsid10449256 {\rtlch\fcs1 \af2\afs26 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs26\insrsid10449256 We are also able to caption onto worksheets or PowerPoint presentations that the teacher may be using in the classroom. If you get those as an electronic document ahead of time, you can save them in your laptop and caption right on top of them. This makes it so much easier for the stud ents then visually to look at whatever the PowerPoint slide and see the captions just below it. \par We also started to play with integrating other technologies, using snapshots from smart boards and integrating those into our captions and digital pictures and, of course, my most useful tool is the TabletPC, which we can write on and incorporate those into your notes that are e\_mailed later to the students. Those the basic techniques that we came up with, and I'll show you how some of those work. \par }\pard \ltrpar\ql \fi432\li0\ri0\sl285\slmult0\nowidctlpar\faauto\rin0\lin0\itap0\pararsid10449256 {\rtlch\fcs1 \af2\afs26 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs26\insrsid10449256 Before but th at, let me give you an example of what some of the notes can look like. She would e\_ mail it to be on a regular basis ahead of time, and then I would just fill in the captions as we went along and add the spacing, if I needed to, I would jus t write in the equations as we went along.
