Postsecondary Education for the Deaf in Korea
Hyung Shik
|
This paper sketches the development of special education to initiate the beginnings of education for the deaf in Korea. This paper takes the view that nearly a hundred years of endeavors in this area have been hampered by two elements; the first is the lack of concrete direction in terms of educational curricula for the Deaf and the second is the public discrimination and apathy that often further disadvantaged people with disabilities in general. The beginning of the paper will provide a general historical overview of the developments to deal with the topic since the term "postsecondary education" is the latest development as far as people with disabilities are concerned in Korea, not to mention deaf students. The paper covers themes on the development of special education that includes the development of deaf education. An attempt will also be made to deal with issues concerning postsecondary education with implications for deaf students. The latter part of the paper will be devoted to highlighting the educational experiences of deaf students within the tertiary sector. |
