The Use of Communication Technology by Deaf People in Greece

Venetta Lampropoulou

Data were collected from 50 Greek Deaf people through a survey questionnaire that was adapted from a large scale national research project questionnaire on the Use of New Technologies and the Information Society by the General Population (the V-Project Research Consulting Institute). This way a comparison could be made with the general population.
The quantitative results of this study revealed that Deaf people seem to own and use all the types of mainstream technology and to a greater extent when comparing with the general (hearing) population. The more common technologies used by the Deaf seem to be the cell (mobile) phone and the pc (internet and email). The young Deaf, the males, and especially the University students or graduates, spend more time on the Internet than all others. In general, the ones who have good computer literacy skills seem to make the most use of all kinds of technology.
In conclusion, the level of education and especially computer knowledge seem necessary in order for Deaf people to take full advantage of the new technologies.
