Providing Real-Time Captioning in Math & Science Classes - It Can Be Done!

Valorie Smith-Pethybridge

This presentation will describe the various techniques used by Miami-Dade College to successfully caption math and science courses.

  1. There are many examples of problems in providing real-time captioning services in math and science classes:

    1. Symbols: ∫, °, →, etc.
    2. Greek letters: μ, θ, π, x, etc.
    3. Variables and equations

    4. Captioning when additional multimedia is used

  2. To overcome these challenges, several adaptations to existing technology can be utilized:

    1. Font choice

    2. Captioned 'abbreviations' can be added to a WORD document using auto-format feature and later 'cut-and-pasted' into C-print-prob"

    3. WORD documents set up with the symbols and merged into the notes later

    4. Captions added onto PowerPoint lectures and other media [e.g.: Smart Boards]

[Examples will be shown and the steps will be demonstrated as to how to do this]
  3. Tablet PCs have been an invaluable tool to incorporate graphs, diagrams, charts, equations, etc. into the text.
[Examples will be shown and the steps will be demonstrated as to how to do this]
  4. Web cams with USB ports can also be used to add snapshots of problems on the board and/or maps or diagrams
[Examples will be shown and the steps will be demonstrated as to how to do this]
