Creating English-to-ASL Translation Using PowerPoint

Sara Hansen

I will show examples of digital texts I have created for use in my classroom that allow students to click on words, phrases and larger chunks of English texts to see pictures or video of the text translated into ASL. The video clips are sometimes the students themselves signing the text, and sometimes other native ASL users doing the translation. I will show the process broken down into simple steps that include scanning a book or typing text into a PowerPoint presentation and then hyperlinking the text to a video or picture file. I will also briefly show how the process can also be done using the SMARTnotebook program, which is slightly more interactive than PowerPoint and can be helpful in creating literacy centers.
