International Symposium: Programs: Summary: Session M1E

With the profliferation of digital video, demonstrated by the runaway popularity of YouTube, the medium will increasingly become an essential part of a teacher's toolbox. Incorporating digital video can be simple, especially with the availabilty of new software tools that teachers can utilize to experiment with new approaches and techniques to make use of the medium in the classroom. We will look at the latest free and almost free software as well as websites offering new products and services, often at little or no cost.
Incorporating digital video in lessons can make them more enjoyable, but it is no panacea. Successful projects require careful planning and preparation. Important considerations include structuring activities that permit students to interact with video materials any time any place, and that encourage creativity and discussion. The presenters will demonstrate projects they have completed, including projects that incorporate videos in history timelines, vocabulary learning, teacher education, and deaf theatre.
The presenters will also discuss more advanced aspects of video production, including captioning/subtitling videos and using video clips in multimedia projects utilizing DVD-like menus and playlists. They will also recommend low-cost hardware combining desktop computers with consumer-grade video equipment that they had used successfully in their projects.
