Telecommunications Engineering Technology
Program Overview
This program is designed to meet the ever increasing need of the telecommunications industry for people who understand state-of-the-art principles, applications, equipment, and regulatory policies. Telecommunications service providers, equipment manufacturers and telecommunications users all need a cadre of those capable of utilizing equipment to its fullest, both from a technical and from a managerial perspective.
The BS program in telecommunications engineering technology started in 1989 and officially began accepting students in the fall of 1990. It was the first bachelor of science program in the United States accredited by the Commission of ABET in telecommunications engineering technology.
In addition to the BS degree programs, the ECTET department offers three certificate programs in telecommunications that are available either on-campus or completely via online learning.
The BS program is offered on campus. It is possible to obtain a BS degree in an online learning format provided appropriate transfer credit is granted for those courses not presently offered in that format.

Many of the telecommunications courses, all the math courses, and a selection of liberal arts courses are available in online learning format. Three of the telecommunications lab courses will require a visit to the Rochester, N.Y., campus for on-campus lab activities. These activities take place one weekend during the quarter in which you are enrolled in the course. This is a required part of the program, and it provides the opportunity to gain experience working with specialized telecommunications equipment, test equipment, and software to supplement the theoretical work.
Transfer credit
Transfer is available for students with coursework from an
associate degree in telecommunications technology, electrical
or electronics technology, and other related areas on a courseby-
course evaluation. Normally, students from closely related
programs, such as telecommunications technology or electrical/
electronics technology, can graduate in 15 quarters. Graduates
of other related programs are also welcome to apply but may
expect to take longer to complete the program. The upperdivision
program assumes transfer of 100 quarter hours of
credit from a lower-division program. Required mathematics,
computer programming, and liberal arts courses are also
provided to students for their upper-division program.
In addition to the bachelor’s degree program, three certificate options in telecommunications technology are also available. The certificate programs have been designed to provide collegelevel education for telecommunications professionals or those employed in a related field. Most courses in the certificate programs can be applied to the bachelor’s degree.
