Basic Technical Communication

Program Overview

RIT offers two certificate programs in technical communication. Today's sophisticated technological environment demands skilled communicators to prepare clear and effective technical instructions, proposals, specifications, reports, hardware and software manuals, multi-media presentations, and online documentation. The RIT programs are directed at those who wish to enter this field as well as practicing professionals who want to expand and enhance their skills. Each certificate can be completed in one year of part-time study.

With innovations continuing to flourish and technical advances impacting every area of business and everyday life, these are truly challenging and inspiring times for anyone in the field of technical communications.

Technical communication is an essential, challenging and rewarding profession, one that can be practiced within an organization or outside, through independent contracting. As the technologies evolve, so does the need for skilled communicators. Industrial, business, scientific, medical and nonprofit sectors have recognized the importance of communication to their successes. The ability to present information effectively in forms such as manuals, brochures, data sheets, promotional materials, systems documentation, reports, trade and professional journals, Web sites and videos, among others is a highly valued asset in the work place today.

Curriculum Review

The following basic technical communication sequence of courses is designed to be completed in three consecutive quarters of part-time study.

Courses:

  • 0688-333 Technical Writing & Editing
  • 0688-363 Technical Document Design

    And one of the following:

  • 0688-361 Research Techniques
  • 0688-476 Instructional Design Principles
  • 0688-398 Special Topics


    Concentration

    Individual courses and/or the certificates may be applied to degree programs such as the BS in applied arts and science.

    Admission Requirements

    Prerequisite for the basic sequence is demonstration (by examination, portfolio, or transcript) of a command of standard written English. Up to four credits may be awarded by examination or for courses taken at another college. Students must achieve a program GPA of at least 2.0 in order to be certified.
