Fred Smith has been at RIT since 1971, as vice president for student affairs until 1994 and, since then, as the Secretary of the Institute and Assistant to the President.
Prior to RIT, he worked at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan as a professor, dean of student resource services and associate dean of student affairs−and at Alma College, Michigan State University, Glen Ellyn Junior High School (Illinois), and St. Charles Junior High School (Illinois).
He has a B.A. from Wheaton College in philosophy, social studies and secondary education; a M.A. in biblical literature also from Wheaton College; and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Michigan State University.
Smith devotes spare hours to numerous community service organizations. He is on the boards of the Strong National Museum of Play and Family Service of Rochester, and formerly served on the boards of the Rochester Museum and Science Center (he served as president and chairman of all these organizations), the Urbanarium and Project Hope.
