Joan Stone, dean of RIT's College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, began vigorously pursuing several goals when she was appointed interim dean in 1997. Among them, working with the faculty to create new and exciting curricula that draw on the unique strengths of CIAS, while at the same time supporting and sustaining existing programs which serve as RIT hallmarks. Her appointment as dean of CIAS in February 1999 served to reinforce her commitment to realizing those goals.

Prior to her appointment as interim dean of CIAS, Stone served for three years as associate provost for academic programs. In that capacity, she served as chair of the Agenda for Action Committee charged with planning the implementation of the first two years of RIT's 10-year Strategic Plan. During her years as associate provost, she was responsible for the Academic Program Review process that assessed all of RIT's undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

Stone also worked closely with the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences' Crossroad's curriculum development process during that time, gaining a special appreciation for the unique challenges faced--as well as the opportunities available--in educating students in the imaging arts and sciences.

Stone joined RIT in 1976, teaching mathematics at RIT's National Technical Institute for the Deaf. She chaired RIT's Faculty Council from 1990 to 1993 before becoming associate provost for academic programs in 1994. Her work on RIT committees and task forces is diverse: from co-chairing the RIT Strategic Planning Task Force on Community to implementing RIT's 1996 Middle States Association accreditation renewal process.

Her ability not only to appreciate the effects of technology on higher education but also to be open to opportunities to grow with them has earned her the respect of her peers both inside CIAS and out.
