Informatics is the study of the collection, storage, analysis, and presentation of digital information. The minor in applied informatics is for students outside the information technology major who wish to apply the tools of informatics to manage, process, and analyze data associated with their field of study or found in another domain. Upon completion of the minor, students will be able to analyze, integrate, and present information in ways that are meaningful to specific audiences. The skills developed in this minor include programming, statistical and other forms of data analysis, management and use of different types of data collections such as databases and XML files, and the application of mash-up tools to combine and present data in novel ways.
Required Courses:
ISTE-271 Introduction to Informatics
ISTE-120 Computational Problem Solving I
STAT-145 Introduction to Statistics I
ISTE-230 Introduction to Database and Data Modeling
ISTE-270 Data Exploration and Knowledge Discovery
ISTE-371 Integration in Informatics

Quarter Curriculum - For Reference Only
Effective fall 2013, RIT will convert its academic calendar from quarters to semesters. The following content has been made available as reference only. Currently matriculated students who began their academic programs in quarters should consult their academic adviser for guidance and course selection.
The minor in applied informatics provides students with the skills needed to extract data from its source; shape, transform, and analyze the data; and present the results in an effective way. Many professional fields are becoming information intensive. As a result, informatics skills are an essential tool. The minor provides basic skills in programming, data access and modeling, HCI, problem solving, and is open for noncomputing majors.
