Dr. Richard Doolittle, Assistant Provost for Undergraduate Education, joined RIT in 1986 as a professor in the College of Science. Since 2001, he has served as the head of the School of Life Sciences, which houses seven undergraduate and three graduate programs. Dick brings extensive experience in curriculum and course development and is a distinguished scholar and prolific researcher. He also has been devoted to issues of pedagogy and developed many new courses and teaching tools, often with grant funding. Dick has been recognized for his work in “The Use of Blended Learning Approach in Teaching Large Enrollment Classes” and in winning a Provost’s Learning and Innovation Grant for “3D Visualization in Science”. Those who know Dick know that the central theme running through his career choices has been a desire to serve students. Over the course of his career Dick has been a very active contributor in the area of Institute service. He was co-chair of RIT’s last Strategic Plan’s Agenda for Action Committee and chaired the Institute Review Board. Dick holds a dual MS/Ph.D. degree in Anatomy and Pathology from the University of Rochester and a BA in Biology from the University of Bridgeport.
The Assistant Provost for Undergraduate Education provides leadership for programming and services designed to meet the needs and support the success of undergraduate students. Oversight includes: Learning Communities, University Studies Program, Academic Advising, the General Education curriculum development, and other special academic enhancement programs. The Assistant Provost will assist as a liaison for Academic Affairs for Rochester General Health System (RGHS) partnership initiatives.
- Overseeing the Faculty Associate for Learning Communities; Director of Institute Advising and Director of University Studies
- Coordinate and facilitate University-wide General Education curriculum development
- Establishing program goals, including short-term and long term strategic objectives
- Plan, develop, and oversee specific academic programming and services to ensure student success and retention
- Work closely with faculty, deans and other stakeholders to insure that academic programming and services meet student needs
- Develop and implement evaluation methodologies to assess the effectiveness of specific academic programs and services
- Develop strategies for long-term growth and development, including assisting in the development of external funding proposals, where appropriate
