RIT Magnetic Resonance Laboratory

The laboratory offers a variety of services, including consulting, feasibility study, system design & development, sponsored project, basic research, needs assessment, and educational services. The laboratory has the ability to measure the following:

• Diffusion Coefficients

• Imaging

• MRI and NMR Radio Frequency Coil Tuning

• MRI and NMR Radio Frequency Coil Construction

• High Resolution NMR Spectroscopy

• Radio Frequency Magnetic Field Mapping

• Spin-Lattice Relaxation Time (T1)

• Spin-Spin Relaxation Time (T2)

• Dielectric Constant & Resistivity



The RIT Magnetic Resonance Laboratory houses the following equipment, listed below with specifications:

300 MHz NMR Spectrometer (Bruker, DRX-300)

QNP (H-1, C-13, P-31, N-14) 5 mm sample probe with z-axis gradient coil at 50 G/cm

BBI (H-1 through Ag-109) 5 mm sample probe with x,y,z-axes gradient coils at 50 G/cm each

BBI probe is suitable for producing 5 mm FOV NMR microscopic images and TF (H-1) 5 mm turbulent flow probe

500 MHz NMR Spectrometer (Bruker, Avance III 500)



Low Field ESR Spectrometer (MRL Design)

300 MHz CW Bridge with 2 cm diameter sample probe

100 Gauss, 30 cm diameter electromagnet

30 µM sample sensitivity

Earth's Field NMR and MRI (Magritek, Terranova-MRI)

2.5 kHz, 7.2 cm diameter 500 ml samples

Low resolution spectroscopy, T1 at BEarth and Bo=18 mT, T2 at BEarth, D

Overhauser Magnetometer with Basestation (Terraplus GSM-19)

Range: 20,000 to 120,000 nT

Resolution: 0.01 nT

Absolute Accuracy: 0.2 nT

Three Axis Borehole Magnetometer (MRL Design)

Magneto resistive unit based on the Honeywell HMR2300

Suitable for measuring the Earth's inclination and declination down a borehole

RF Coil Tuning Bridge (MRL Design)

5 to 500 MHz

Suitable for tuning the frequency and impedance of imaging coils

Vector Impedance Analyzer


100 kHz to 200 MHz

Suitable for a variety of RF circuit analysis and tuning.
