Sweetwater Ethanol produces a cellulosic-based feedstock from ensiled biomass that significantly reduces the cost of making ethanol. Its decentralized business model utilizes portable processors located on farm sites that dramatically reduce transportation costs while providing the farmers with a convenient supply of enhanced animal feed. SweetWater initially used MBA students to help with development of the company’s business plan and a number of its investor presentations. Currently it is utilizing the laboratory facilities at RIT’s Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies for product development and testing. Recently the company was awarded a NYSERDA grant which will now allow the company to scale up its processes and to undertake more comprehensive material and nutritional testing.
