BikeMS Pedal to the Park 2008

BikeMS BikeMS Pedal to the Park is September 6 & 7 at Darien Lake Theme Park and Resort. The event has changed location from previous years, with new routes running between Darien Lake, Spencerport, Medina, and LeRoy. Between the days, a total of seven routes will be active, with rides ranging from 15 to 100 miles.

To ensure the event runs smoothly, and to keep riders safe, the RIT Amateur Radio Club has stepped up to provide voice communications and tracking services. Several support vehicles provided by the MS Society will be equipped with 2m radios and APRS tracking devices. Additionally, several hams are needed to operate their own vehicles as sweeps for the routes. Volunteers are needed to operate from support vechicles, their own vehicles, and from rest stops along the routes.

If you are able to help on either day, please sign up on the RaRa public service website. More details will be provided to volunteers as the event gets closer.

Goals:

To provide K2GXT with an antenna to pair with the 20-10 meter beam. Provide coverage on lower bands and give a more general antenna pattern. The antenna project also allowed members of the Rochester Institute of Technology Amateur Radio Club to gain hands on experience building an antenna while a club antenna installation was also important.

Laser Communications System

laser group

On April 18th, 2008 several members participated in "shooting" a laser beam across the RIT campus. This laser beam carried a morse code signal and successfully communicated across a distance of about .28 miles. The Beam was very bright at this distance and the only limitation on the distance was the fact that we ran out of campus!
