all About Art house

Art House

Art House is an active community environment where those who have a vested interest in art, regardless of academic major, can live together with like-minded individuals. We pride ourselves on being one of the more social floors at RIT and one of the few that can boast an even 50-50 mix of males and females. We offer a number of enriching community service opportunities and entertaining floor activities, including an annual trip to Toronto. However, as anyone who has been to Art House can tell you, staying on our floor for even a few minutes is often entertainment enough.

We occupy the second floor of the Colby dorm, have 45 residents and any number of off-floor members and alumni. Our floor features a studio, equipped with a cutting table, paper cutter, surround sound system, six drawing tables, and three sofas. We also have a fully-ventilated spraybooth, networked laser printer, screen printing darkroom, and lounge.

Membership

One must apply to be both an on-floor and off-floor member. Both have all the same benefits of the floor: studio, spraybooth etc. On- floor members have priority to the facilities as well as activities, notably the year-end Toronto trip. Off-floor members are given card access to the floor and are first in line to move on-floor should a space open up. Members are charged $90 (on-floor) and $45 (off-floor). This money goes to keeping the equiptment in working order and funding for the Toronto trip.

activities & Community service

All floor members must participate in at least four activities per quarter. The activities committee will post events on the main wall and members can sign up to participate there. Members can create their own activity as long as there is seven people involved and one e-board member. Events do not need to be related to Art House.

Also, all floor members are required to complete hours of community service. The hours vary depending on on- or off-floor status as well as year of graduation. The hours start at 8 for freshmen and go down by 2 as year level goes up. Off-floor members have half of the requirements and E-Board members subtract 2 hours from the total. For example, an on-floor sophomore has 6 hours of required community service, while an off-floor sophomore has 3.
