Video Game Marathon: Now Taking Donations!

We are now taking donations, online and in person, for the Video Game Marathon fundraiser! Here are all of the ways you can make your donation, online and in person:

Buy with Paypal or a Credit Card:

Although using Paypal’s services charges our club a small fee, we want you to have flexibility in how you can donate online. For donations of $20 or more, the club will ignore the Paypal fee when detirmining how much “time” your donation will buy. To donate through Paypal (using a Paypal account or credit/debit card), please visit our club’s ChipIn page.

Buy With Cash or Check:

Club members will have a table in the Student Alumni Union on RIT’s campus from 10-4, Monday through Thursday, to accept cash and check donations. You may also bring your donation straight to us at the marathon (the lobby of Gracie’s dining hall), starting Thursday May 7th at 5pm. We’ll be accepting donations there for as long as the clock goes! (So the more donations we get, the longer we’ll be taking donations!)

Revolution Money Exchange

Revolution Money Exchange is a new way to send money online, with no fees! This is the best way to donate to the fundraiser online, because it doesn’t cost you or the club anything! There is a delay time, so this option works only for people who already have a RME account with funds in it.

To buy raffle tickets with Revolution Money Exchange:

1) Click this button and set up an account:
Refer A Friend using Revolution Money Exchange

2) Click “Send Money” on your Revolution Money Exchange account page once your account is set up.

3) Put sac2893@rit.edu as the recipient email, choose the amount you wish to donate.

3) Put “Old Man Ranting” in the subject line.

4) Click “Submit.”

Video Game Marathon Fundraiser

SCS is holding a video game marathon to raise money to build our school! Sound like more fun that it should be? Don’t worry – it’s not fun! Not for the people that have to play, anyway!

The idea is to get our hands on the world’s worst, most boring video game. The more money you donate, the longer our volunteers have to play! How long can you force us to play the world’s worst video game with your donations?

Good news! A donor has generously agreed to match 50% of the first $1000 we raise! This means that for every dollar you donate, an extra $0.50 will go toward our cause… and toward our next hour of marathon game playing!

Hours “Donated” So Far: 63!
Amount Needed to Reach Hour 64: $23.69

About the Game

We went to the Game Developer’s Club at RIT with one question: can you make us the world’s most boring video game? And boy, did they deliver! The game is called Old Man Ranting, and it’s just the player trying to stay awake (by jiggling their computer mouse) while the character’s grandfather rants and raves. If the player fails, it takes a minute to wake up, and the grandfather yells! Can our club members stand up to the challenge for hours on end? Come by the fundraiser and see!

About the Event

The marathon will begin at 5pm, May 7th, in the lobby of Gracie’s, the main dining hall on RIT’s campus, and go as long as your donations dictate! The first hour will cost $1 in donations, with each hour costing 8% more (so hour two will cost $1.08, etc.) . Our club members will man the game in 2-4 hour shifts, playing continuously throughout the night and days to follow, for as long as your donations keep us going! But to proceed, each hour must be fully funded before it starts. So for example, if we only raised $3, we would only play for 2 hours, because it would take $3.25 to get us to play for 3 hours. (Of course, we hope to raise a lot more than just $3, so we’re planning to play a lot longer than that!)

Don’t have time to come visit (and heckle) us while we play? Or maybe you’re not local, but would like to see us suffer anyway? We’ll have streaming video set up, so you can heckle us from afar! Check out our Ustream page for live webcam and chat, now!

About Donations

SCS will begin accepting donations 10am, Monday May 4th, and continue right through the fundraiser. A table will be set up in the Student Alumni Union to accept donations, Monday-Thursday 10am-4pm. We’ll also be accepting donations online starting at 10am on Monday – visit the donation page for details. We’ll take donations via PayPal (including credit cards) and Revolution Money Exchange.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t give credit to LoadingReadyRun’s Desert Bus for Hope, which inspired this innovative fundraiser by playing the also-obnoxious video game “Desert Bus” on end to raise money for the charity Child’s Play. We have our own take on the idea, but you guys are awesome for coming up with the idea, and raising so much for a worthy cause!
