5. Story Time
1. This year, Student Government decided, is the Year of the Club. Each day one club will be highlighted- on the Center for Campus Life’s webpage, in the slide show above Ben and Jerry’s, on Vice President Mary Beth Cooper’s person (we provide a shirt), and on a table in the SAU. InterVarsity’s Club Day is this Wednesday, September 17th! Come stop by our table in the SAU, or better yet, share in the fun and support us for an hour or two. Contact Allison to sign up.
2. If you have sat at a table for InterVarsity, set up chairs, invited people to events, hung up posters, designed posters, made oobleck, played music or assisted in any of the multitude of ways we have needed help in the past few weeks, thank you. We are only able to establish and advance a witnessing community at RIT of students and faculty who follow Jesus as Savior and Lord because of your willingness to serve. Thank you.
3. This Friday we will look more into understanding the character of God as we hear Mick Snyder talk about the Holy Spirit and the purpose of having God’s Spirit within us. Once again, Large Group will be in SDC 1300/1310 at 7 PM. Afterwards we will have a super awesome event that I’m not allowed to advertise- you’ll just have to trust me and show up.
4. Did you know that in 2006, 8000 Africans died from AIDS each day (that’s more people a year than the population of Los Angeles- the 2nd largest city in the US)? Last year InterVarsity partnered with Browncroft community church to host a 5k run/walk to fight AIDS in Africa. With more than 250 runners, we raised $17,000 to be donated to an AIDS clinic in Africa. This year, on October 4th, we will be hosting a race again to raise money for the SIM/KHC Dawe Langano Clinic in Ethiopia. If you are interested in volunteering or in running the race, please contact Evan or be ready to sign up at Large Group. For more information, visit www.aid2aids.org.
5. Two short stories:
On Saturday I had limited time to study and a quiz due. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the book for the class (yes, I’m cheap). After much effort and no success trying to get in touch with the person who promised to lend her book to me, I prayed that God would provide in some way for me. Literally minutes, if not seconds later, another friend called me informing me that he had just received the textbook in the mail and would be glad to lend it to me whenever I needed it.
On Monday morning I woke early to finish homework due at 10 AM. I knew I was not going to have enough time and I also realized that it would be a long, very busy day. As 10 AM approached, I prayed desperately for God, in His mercy, to cancel my class (I rarely pray this, I promise!). At 10:03 AM, with my assignment unfinished, I trudged to class and ran into a classmate who informed me that class was canceled. With a shocked look on my face, I candidly explained how I had just prayed for that to happen. Similarly surprised, he said he had prayed the same thing that morning.
Moral of the stories: God is real and He answers prayers! If you have a story of how God worked in your life, please share it at your small group and let me know about it and maybe I’ll include it next week.
May God richly bless you this week.
