Noche Buena
Christmas Eve is known as "Noche Buena" (the Good Night). It is a time for family members to gather together to rejoice and feast around the Nativity scenes that are present in nearly every home. This night is interrupted at midnight by the ringing of bells calling the families to "La Misa Del Gallo" (Rooster's Mass). Dinner is often eaten late at night, but before midgnight so families may attend mass. Festivities usually go all night, and like an old verse says "Esta noche es Noche Buena, y no es noche de dormir" (Tonight is the goodnight, and it is not meant for sleeping).
Every year L.A.S.A. calls all Latinos and RIT community to share a meal together in celebration of the winter holidays. The food is always provided by L.A.S.A. members that donate their time to the rest of the group. This event has been a L.A.S.A. tradition since its creation 1985, and every year we continue to add new food and attract more members. If you would like to volunteer and cook for the event, let us know and we will purchase the ingredients for you.
