Here's the lowdown on how to recycle at RIT!
What does Monroe County accept for recycling?
What's important for students to keep in mind is that recycling rules differ from county to county, and what is acceptable for recycling back home for you is probably different than the person sitting next to you. With this in mind, here is what Monroe County (and of course, RIT) accepts for recycling:
- Containers:
- Glass
- Milk cartons
- Juice containers
- Plastic containers with #1 and #2 only
- Tin, aluminum, and steel cans
- Empty aerosol cans
- Paper:
- Newspaper
- Computer printer paper
- Index cards
- Envelopes (can have windows or labels)
- Colored paper
- Manilla folders or envelopes
- Magazines (or other glossy paper)
- Cereal boxes
- Corrugated cardboard
- Pizza boxes (without extensive amounts of grease)
- Paper with limited adhesive
- Hard cover or paperback books
- Spiral-bound notebooks
Keep an eye out for the blue (containers) and green (paper) bins on campus to recycle your items!
What About Electronics?
RIT is a tech school, and there is certainly no shortage of electronic devices that need a proper disposal. Many electronics may contain a variety of hazardous chemicals (such as mercury in the backlights of some LCD monitors) and should not thrown be out with all other garbage.
Instead, take your items to SEAL's E-Cycling event when it comes around. If you are unable to make it or need to recycle it sooner, please contact the local electronics recycling company Maven Technologies for further information.
Other Recycling Tips:
- If you have several plastic grocery bags, some stores such as Wegmans have bins set up inside just for recycling these bags.
- Ink cartridges and cell phones can be recycled at any of the Imagine It boxes around campus. (These are very tall cardboard displays.)
- Standard batteries can be recycled at Best Buy.
- Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) can be dropped off at Home Depot for recycling.
