Explore RIT Mobile Apps
Looking to explore what RIT offers in the evolving world of mobile apps?
A new website will serve as a resource for all information related to official university mobile apps, as well as highlighting apps produced by students and others in the RIT community.
The site is designed to encourage collaboration between mobile app developers associated with RIT and to innovate and create within the RIT mobile environment. Mobile @ RIT is located at www.rit.edu/mobile.
The website will serve as a central repository for everything mobile at RIT. Official RIT mobile apps for Android and the Apple iPhone became available last fall. The apps feature RIT news (separated into categories); a searchable campus map; an events calendar (also separated into categories); lab hours; RIT and RTS shuttle-bus schedules; dining-service locations, hours and menus; and more. The apps are available for download from Google Play and the iTunes App Store.
RIT also offers a mobile-friendly website compatible with a variety of mobile devices, which offers easy access to a wide range of similar information. To use the mobile website, go to http://m.rit.edu. No log-in, download or installation is required.
Mobile @ RIT will also showcase apps created by students, faculty and others in the RIT community. For example, apps related to artwork, photography, entertainment and education. The site encourages other developers to submit apps that will be featured in the Mobile @ RIT showcase.
Modo Labs, a Massachusetts-based mobile design and development firm, assisted RIT in app development, employing its Kurogo architecture. Kurogo is an open-source platform designed to power mobile websites and iPhone and Google Play apps. It emphasizes clean integration, a cross-platform user experience, and deep customizability that RIT app developers can tap into both in the classroom and for an array of university services.
Mobile @ RIT will become more robust in future phases and serve as a resource for mobile developers. Guidelines and processes will be available online. Future improvements will also include social media.
