Learning Assistance Participants
AIM Learning Assistance Participants are identified on a quarterly basis and invited to participate in the program. Eligibility will be based on the previous quarter's grades and registration in an SI supported course. If a student does not meet the requirements and did not receive an invitation they are still able to participate in the other components of the AIM Program. If a student chooses to participate in this program, they will be asked that to sign an agreement that acknowledges the requirements of the program and the responsibilities in completing those requirements. Each student will also have an individual agreement that they create and sign with the AIM Learning Assistant. This will outline the specific steps that they must take to help with their academic success.
Research tells us that grades of D, F, or W during a student's first quarter in college are often predictors of future academic problems unless the student receives early intervention and support. Especially important is addressing early struggles in sequences of courses required for graduation. In order to keep students on track in pursuit of their academic goals, RIT is offering a new program designed to identify and address the issues that have been stumbling blocks during the first year.
The Academic Intervention & Mentoring (AIM) initiative is a multi-faceted program consisting of several key elements for the purpose of supporting the student. They included:
- Immediate repeat of a course in which a D, F, or W was received
- Participation in supplemental instruction (SI) sessions offered for any identified courses
- Regular meetings with the AIM Learning Assistant.
As part of the AIM program, the student is expected to:
- Earn a C or better in the repeated course.
- Receive a minimum of a 2.0 quarterly GPA.
- Attend a minimum of three meetings with the AIM Learning Assistant.
- Participate in academic support programs and resources as outlined by the Learning Assistant.
- Complete all requirements outlined in the AIM Program Agreement.
