Tutor Training Curriculum

There are three levels in the RIT Tutor Training program.

Level 1: Novice

Tutors have little or no previous training or experience. These tutors work under direct supervision of a faculty or staff member.

Level 2: Apprentice

Tutors complete level one of tutor training. This consists of 5 required workshops and 25 hours of supervised tutoring.

Level 3: Associate

Tutors complete level two of tutor training. This consists of 5 required and five elective workshops and an additional 25 hours of supervised tutoring.

Workshops are offered in a variety of formats, either in a classroom setting or online at myCourses.rit.edu. Each one-hour workshop is worth one non-credit hour.

Required Workshops are:

  • Workshop #1: Orientation to Tutor Training (your supervisor gives this class)
  • Workshop #2: Ethics and Bloom (Classroom)
  • Workshop #3: Problem Solving and Critical Thinking (Classroom)
  • Workshop #4: Instructional Techniques: Listening (Classroom)
  • Workshop #5: Elective, to be determined

Elective Workshops are:

  • Learning Styles (Online)
  • Basic Signs for Tutors (Online)
  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (Classroom)
  • Reviewing Math Topics (Classroom)
  • Learning from Peer Tutors (Classroom)
  • Common Errors and Misconceptions in Alg., Trig., and Calc. (Classroom)
  • Tutoring Strategies (Online)

  • Peer Tutors must work with their tutoring supervisor to determine which specific workshops are required.
  • Curriculum is subject to revision at any time.
  • Workshops will be offered at various times throughout the academic quarter.
  • Each tutor should keep a list of all the workshops they have attended and should make certain they sign the attendance sheets provided at each workshop.
