What is Shaolin Kung Fu?

Shaolin Kung Fu, which originated in the Shaolin Temple in China over 4,000 years ago, is considered to be the oldest Martial Art in the world. It is a highly effective method of self-discipline incorporating breathing techniques similar to Yoga, body conditioning, ancient art exercises, and various methods of fighting techniques. The Wu Su style is a vigorous style using powerful but graceful ballet like techniques, with considerable emphasis on leg techniques and mental discipline.

What is the Duteau Shaolin Kung Fu Academy?

The Shaolin Kung Fu Academy is located at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY and was established in 1976 by Sigung Jean Duteau. It is very traditional, non commercial school where we are dedicated to teaching the American Public the true art and meaning of the Shaolin Kung Fu. Classes are primarily offered to the students of RIT but everyone is welcome. All you have to do is register through the physical education department at RIT.

Kung Fu can benefit everyone, young and old, male and female, as it uses breathing and meditation techniques derived from the Taoist System to keep the body resilient, the mind active and in harmony. The purpose of Kung Fu is not to create a fighting machine, but rather a complete disciplined individual who doesn't boast of his or her prowess, but uses the knowledge of the Martial Art in self-defense only when a life threatening situation exists. Kung Fu is a system that accentuates speed, agility and circular flow which do not require physical strength.
