The Disability Services Office at Rochester Institute of Technology is committed to providing students and faculty/staff with disabilities equal access to programs, services and physical facilities at RIT. We strive to foster an environment where students and faculty/staff with disabilities are welcomed, valued and respected.

Assurance of equal access to educational opportunity rests upon legal foundations established by federal law, specifically the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 including Section 504, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

By federal law, a person with a disability is any person who: 1. has a physical or mental impairment; 2. has a record of such impairment; or 3. is regarded as having such an impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities such as self-care, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, or learning.

For students attending RIT, the Disability Services Office approves and coordinates academic and residential accommodations due to a disability and makes referrals to campus service providers as appropriate. The Academic Accommodations Office houses the test center and provides notes and texts in alternate format.

For employees of RIT, the Disability Services Office collaborates with Human Resources to approve and coordinate work related accommodations due to a disability.
