Special ESL Instruction for Groups

Special programs for 12-15 people can be offered for short term study throughout the year. Such programs are tailored to meet the needs of the groups, e.g. Business English, English and Art, English for Engineers, etc. Groups can choose the dates best suited to their needs for one week, two weeks, four weeks, etc.

English for International Executives and Trainees

The ELC at RIT serves business people who are non-native speakers of English. The Center offers classes and individualized instruction to assist people in business with the communication skills they need most: pronunciation, writing, listening and speaking. In addition, other English language classes are offered at several levels.
  • Pronunciation - Teachers trained in speech/ language/ linguistics who have experience training non-native speakers work with clients to make their speech clearer and less accented. Clients learn to improve their pronunciation, intonation patterns and enunciation.
  • Listening/Speaking - Instruction focuses on the communication skills essential in business: speaking at meetings and presenting reports. Clients learn how to listen to questions and how to respond with clarity. Clients videotape their talks and receive constructive feedback that helps them improve their presentation skills.
  • Writing - Instruction in writing focuses on the American style of organizing and presenting information in written form. Work in sentence structure and grammar is taught as an outgrowth of students' written work. Clients learn to do the kind of writing most used in business settings: memos, reports, letters and summaries of meetings.

The Intensive English program is also popular with family members. Groups are small, and participants have an opportunity to interact with one another as they learn the language and the culture. Field trips and social events are planned throughout the course of the program to help students acculturate and get to know each other.
