Placement for new students

New students are tested and placed according to a battery of tests:

The MTELP (Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency) tests reading, grammar and vocabulary.
A speaking test
A writing test
Conditionally-admitted RIT students may be pre-placed by TOEFL or IELTS scores.
Post-arrival placement testing using the Michigan Test of English Proficiency, and ELC Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing Tests.

Undergraduate students who score above 80 on the MTELP and score 5.5 or 6 on the Writing and Speaking test are not required to take English courses. However, graduate students and some undergraduate student may be referred back to the ELC if there are particular linguistic skill areas in which professors and advisors feel a student may need improvement.
