Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is the oldest Greek-letter organization established in America
by African American college women. Founded in 1908 under the direction of Ethel Hedgeman
Lyle, Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown well beyond her birthplace of Howard University and has
now expanded to her international home.

The Outstanding Omicron Beta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has been
serving the Rochester, New York community through service and scholarship since 1986. The
chapter’s charter of Omicron Beta includes Nazareth College, Rochester Institute of Technology,
University of Rochester, and St. John Fisher College.

Over the past 25 years, the ladies of Omicron Beta have hosted many innovative and relevant
programs at all four campuses. Such programs include AKAawareness Week, AKA Week, Think
Pink Week, Mr. Pink Panther, STAR Essay Contest, Wilson Pearls and numerous community
service projects to serve the city of Rochester as well as donating to regional conferences.

The current members of Omicron Beta have donated time to Foodlink, as well as household
goods to The Sojourner House. In December 2011, the ladies of Omicron Beta caroled with
seniors at St. Johns Meadows, donated baked goods to SWAN for a Christmas activity for

children, and provided funds to Genesee Baptist Church ministries and food pantry as well as

supporting and donating to community agencies throughout Western New York, Great Lakes Region,
internationally and supporting partnerships; American Cancer Society, Heifer International and NAACP.

Omicron Beta Chapter has been recognized within their region for exemplary academic
achievement several times and most recently was awarded Best of the Best by the international
office.
