OPT Open Forum - A presentation on New OPT Rules, questions from the audience, answers from International Student Services.
Friday, May 16, 2008
2-4 PM (starting right at 2 PM sharp)
Ingle Auditorium (Building 4, SAU)

Last month, we notified you that several new rules were published by the US government and affecting OPT - Optional Practical Training (for students with F-1 visas). (There are no changes for students on J-1 visas.)

For all students on OPT, you now have a new responsibility to report to International Student Services:

  • the name and address of your employer
  • if/when you change employers
  • number of days you are unemployed, because there is a new rule limiting
    unemployment to 90 days

(on Friday, we will publish our new web pages that will allow you to submit this new information to ISS)

The rest of the rules affect students who fall into one of these categories:

  1. Students with very specific majors in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math, (and whose employer is willing to join the E-Verify system) may be eligible for a 17-month extension of OPT. or
  2. students who are on OPT, and have an employer who filed for an H1b, may be eligible for an extension of OPT to cover the period between April 1 and October 1 (when the H becomes effective - if approved).

So, please join us at this forum for a brief presentation and an opportunity to ask us questions.

By next week, we also expect to have much more information about these new rules up on our website (and will announce that with a new email) for anyone who cannot attend this forum.

Thanks for your attention.

Regarding the recent earthquake in Beichuan Qiang County in China, our office wants to extend whatever assistance we can to students who may be affected by this tragedy. Please let us know if we can assist with communications, or anything else you think of.

In addition, if anyone is involved in local fundraising/relief efforts, please let us know so we can share that information more broadly.

International Student Services staff, the staff of the RIT Student Counseling Center, and the Center for Religious Life team are available to anyone affected by this news. Please do not hesitate to connect with us and we are more than willing to get you assistance or to just be a receptive place for you to talk.

Sincerely,

Jeff Cox
Director, International Student Services
