Description
The Resident Advisor is a para-professional staff member of the Center for Residence Life who is responsible for developing a comprehensive residential experience for on-campus students and specifically for a community within an assigned area.

The RA job can be broken down into six major components each representing a necessary and valued piece of the residential experience for our students. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Educator
    • Maintain and emphasize the importance of an academic environment in the residential community

    • Identify residents with academic difficulty and refer them to the appropriate people

    • Educate members of your community about multiculturalism using knowledge and understanding of diversity

    • Encourage discussion groups, seminars and programs, which will broaden students' educational experiences

    • Express and encourage the value of out-of-classroom learning opportunities as an extension of the academic experience

    • Maintain a commitment to the balanced growth of the residents and the community by providing floor/area programs within the guidelines of the Common Experience

    • Mainstream RA: attend RIT sign and execute a plan to learn sign language skills

  • Community Builder
    • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with the floor

    • Encourage students to contribute to and participate in floor activities

    • Maintain proper communication with residents

    • Discuss and clarify on an on-going basis Institute and residence hall rules, regulations, policies and procedures so that all members understand them

    • Intervene in conflict situations and assist students in resolving the conflict or make referrals as appropriate

    • Encourage and assist residents in taking responsibility for what happens on the floor (where requests for cooperation are unsuccessful, communicate and document violations and problems to their supervisors.

    • Have a working knowledge of the RIT Judicial System

    • Encourage student participation in the development and implementation of programs

  • Helper
    • Implement intentional outreach efforts to become acquainted with, and to build rapport with each student in your community
    • Utilize appropriate communication and listening skills to maximize the effectiveness of your outreach efforts

    • Through your outreach efforts, recognize behavioral cues, which may indicate personal problems, thus allowing you to intervene early

    • Act as a referral agent for students desiring or needing professional assistance

    • Be knowledgeable about campus and residence life resources

    • Help resolve personal conflicts

    • Maintain confidentiality

  • Team Member
    • Know the organization and activities of RHA/Greek Council/Student Government and work with these organizations

    • Participate in all staff meetings (approximately two hours per week) and individual meetings

    • Attend all staff meetings, in-services, spring and fall training

    • Participate in Student Development Initiatives

    • Support Center for Residence Life programming initiatives

    • Work with other RAs in programming efforts

    • Represent the Center through involvement on committees and project teams

  • Leadership
    • Help identify student leaders and encourage the development of leadership and involvement in campus organizations

    • Serve as a positive role model, including, but not limited to, academic, personal and leadership positions

    • Actively continue personal leadership growth

    • Establish and implement a personal skill development plan with your supervisor

    • Utilize resources that will enhance the further development of self, members of your community and your fellow staff members

    • Participate and support the Center for Residence LifeÕs Leadership Development Program

  • Administrator
    1. Ensure the necessary forms and reports are completed accurately and submitted on time

    2. Perform all on-duty responsibilities

    3. Perform any additional functions as assigned by your supervisor

    4. Remain on the floor until the Institute officially closes and administrative responsibilities are completed at that time

    5. Have an active, working knowledge of the RA manual

Time Commitment

  • RA position is a 20-hour per week time commitment

  • RAs receive one weekend off per month, with prior approval from supervisor

  • Prior approval from your supervisor is necessary for involvement in outside activities

  • Prior approval from our supervisor is necessary for additional employment beyond the RA position and is not to exceed 10 hours per week.

  • Prior approval from your supervisor is necessary to register for more than 18 credit hours
