Global Village Opens Its Doors!

by: Harold Fields, Global Village Community Director- Center for Residence Life

On Thursday, September 30, 2010, RIT officially celebrated the opening of its newest residential and retail facility, Global Village.  The Grand Opening featured guided tours of residential suites, free samples of food and drink, as well as a ribbon-cutting ceremony.  Global Village is a L.E.E.D certified facility with an emphasis on the global and entrepreneurial missions of RIT.  Global Village is internationally themed with its furniture, carpets, and artwork representative of regions around the world including East Asia, the Middle East, Central Europe and Central America.

Global Village is comprised of three separate buildings - Global Plaza 400, Global Way 403, and Global Way 404.  All of the living spaces in these three buildings are suite-style typically housing 6 residents.  In addition to residential space, Global Plaza 400 is home to several retail and service facilities including:

·         Salsarita’s Fresh Mex Cantina

·         Global Grille

·         Oishii Sushi

·         The Market at Global Village

·         Shear Global Salon

·         Shop One ²

·         Global Village Plaza

·         Better Me Wellness Center

·         HUB Print Center and Post Office

In addition to all of the retail offerings, Global Village also houses two special communities, Entrepreneurs Hall as well as a Study Abroad learning cluster.

Global Village is staffed by 8 Global  Resident Advisors (GRAs).  These student staff members live within the community and are available as a resource and advocate for residents.  They also plan events during each quarter and sit community hours nightly from 8pm to 10 pm in the lobby of Global Way 404.  There have been some exciting programs already this year including a Scavenger Hunt and International Dessert Social, Global Village Cook Off, an International Film Festival, and an Academic Support Services Open House.  Be on the lookout for additional programs soon!
