RIT Center for Women and Gender: An Inclusive Campus Resource

by: Darci Lane, Assistant Director - The Center for Women and Gender

The Center for Women and Gender, housed in the new Campus Center is a valuable resource, conveniently located at the center of campus.

We offer many helpful services to members of the RIT community including:

Individual Counseling - We offer time-limited counseling to students (including men) that may be dealing with relationship issues, interpersonal difficulties, body image issues, unplanned pregnancy and sexual concerns, stress, difficulty setting boundaries or being assertive and many other issues.

Psychoeducational Groups - We offer Eating Disorders, Healthy Relationships and Sexual Assault/Sexual Abuse Survivor groups. We also welcome feedback on other groups the center may offer in the future.

Student-driven Committees - Three committees were formed in the Spring of 2010. The Body Image, Healthy Relationships and Social Change and Community Service committees offer an exciting way for students to be more involved with the center, connect to the community and develop leadership skills.

CARES (Campus Advocacy Response and Support) - The CARES program is a 24-hour response program for students who have been exposed to dating/domestic violence, sexual assault, harassment and/or stalking. CARES services are confidential, voluntary and available to all students.

Wellness Classes - The center offers two Wellness Classes. The Eating, Body Image and Food class is designed to address attitudes and beliefs about food, eating, nutrition and body image. The Relationship Health Class addresses relationships, how they are formed, maintained and ended when necessary.

PEERS - Peers Educating and Enriching RIT Students is a program of Student Affairs in which students play an active role in educating the community about issues that students often face.  Our Center currently coordinates this program for the division of Student Affairs.

Women’s Career Leadership Program -The RIT Women’s Career Leadership Certificate Program provides an understanding of leadership as it relates to women by helping participants develop confidence when entering the leadership roles or the career field. This program, a collaborative effort of the Leadership Institute and Community Service Center, Office of Cooperative Education and Career Services and the Center for Women and Gender offers an opportunity for women to explore their potential as future leaders.

Signature Events and Programs - The center has exciting annual programs including Lighting the Way, V-Day, Take Our Daughter and Sons to Work Day and the Women’s Career Achievement Dinner. We also co-sponsor various programs throughout the year and accept program requests from members of the RIT community.
