Public Safety – Serving the RIT Community
The RIT Public Safety Department prides itself on maintaining a safe and secure campus environment for its students, faculty, and staff. The members of the Public Safety Department are committed to the highest standards of quality in promoting a safe educational environment.
We encourage the RIT community to take an active role in assisting the Public Safety Department by never leaving personal belongings unattended, locking all doors, locking windows, crossing at crosswalks, traveling in well lit highly traveled areas, removing all items from parked vehicles, and by reporting suspicious activity immediately. Working together, we can provide a safer environment for the campus community.
Listed below is how the Public Safety Department serves our community on a daily basis.
Public Safety is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Public Safety Officers regularly patrol residential and academic facilities, campus roadways and parking lots.
Blue Light Call Boxes are located campus wide including RIT operated apartment complexes, residence halls and parking lots. These call boxes dial directly into Public Safety, identifying the caller’s exact location.
Report a Lost Item Online: If you are an RIT member use this link: http://finweb.rit.edu/publicsafety/safety/lostitems.html to report a lost item. Requires an RIT computer account.
Confidential Tip Line: The goal in providing this service is to obtain information that is unattainable through conventional methods and to assist Public Safety with the investigation of suspicious or endangering behavior that might go otherwise unreported. If you are an RIT member, use this link http://finweb.rit.edu/publicsafety/forms/tipline/
Safety Voice: Safety Voice is an online forum available to all RIT community members designed to report safety or security related conditions observed on campus, for example burned out walkway or parking lot lights. The Public Safety Department encourages community members to report safety related issues in a timely manner so that they are appropriately addressed. If you are an RIT member, use this link https://finweb.rit.edu/publicsafety/forms/safetyvoice/.
Motorist Assists such as jumps starts and lock outs are free for RIT students, employees and visitors.
Fire and Security Alarm Monitoring: Communication Officers monitor all alarms and incoming telephone emergencies along with coordinating responses of emergency personnel and equipment.
The Public Safety Department offers a variety of prevention awareness programs related to personal safety and alcohol/drug awareness.
Additional Services include but are not limited to: apartment and residence hall room lock outs, emergency notifications and security surveys.
Report all crimes and suspicious conditions immediately!
