Christmas Shoe Boxes for the Open Door Mission

by: Sharon Kompalla, Associate Director, Center for Residence Life, Apartment Area

Coming Soon – Christmas Shoe Box Gifts for the Open Door Mission of Rochester

The Open Door Mission, Inc. of Rochester is a not-for-profit ministry, founded in prayer, to meet the spiritual and physical needs of the last, the least, and the lost of our community.

The Open Door Mission offers several programs to help meet the goal of assisting the less fortunate in our surrounding community.

At the holiday time – they sponsor a specific program titled “Christmas Shoe Box Gifts” which is the program the Center for Residence Life Apartment Area has chosen to support again this year.  Last year, our first year participating in this program, we were able to donate over 100 boxes!  If you have any empty shoe boxes that you would be willing to donate to this effort – you can drop them off to either the Apartment Area West office at 113 Riverknoll or the Apartment Area East office at 1 Colony Manor (9am-5pm) between now and December 9th!

Also - we will be filling the shoes boxes with travel size personal hygiene items such as deodorant, toothpaste, soap, razors, shampoo, lotion, etc.  The Open Door Mission also suggests including a new pair of tube socks, gloves, mittens, a hat or scarf.   Items can be for a man, woman or child.  Any donations of these items are appreciated!

We will need help wrapping the boxes and labeling them accordingly, and delivering them to the Open Door Mission’s Caring Center on Plymouth Avenue the week of Dec. 12th-16th.

If you want to participate – you can donate shoeboxes, the items to fill them, or assist us with the wrapping and delivering!

More information is to come about the specific date for wrapping and delivering!  Pizza, beverages and festive holiday music will be provided to any volunteers!

You can also give any donations of shoe boxes or toiletries to the Residence Life staff members in your building/complex – if they knock on your door or you see them doing their weekly Rounds, feel free to ask them to take your donation!

Thank you in advance for helping those in need in our community!
