SPIDER LAMP SAFETY ADVISORY

A SUNY campus recently had 2 close calls involving a floor lamp similar to the picture.
The lamp has multiple adjustable arms to direct light – the 5 light multi-color shade model has been a popular item with students.  The close calls involved the heat from the bulbs causing the shades to melt. In one situation this caused the build-up of toxic fumes and the melted shade plastic burned the bed spread.  The other case burned a shade and began to turn a wall poster brown in only 15 minutes.

Be sure that you are using the appropriate bulbs for the appliance.  The model available from local discount stores call for a type B 25 watt bulb.  Be sure to follow the directions for your particular appliance.
