Referrals
Student Health Center medical providers refer students to health care professionals in the community as needed for specialty care. The Student Health Center maintains a list of frequently utilized specialty providers in the area and can assist students with the appointment process.
For students with insurance through RIT:
- You must be referred by a SHC provider for coverage of a
first visit unless:
- The student Health Center is closed
- The student is 50 miles or more from campus
- The student is on coop
- The student is not eligible to be seen at the SHC
- Subsequent follow up visits do not require an additional referral
- Bring an insurance claim form to every visit (link to downloadable claim form).
- Review the specifics of coverage for your situation
- Contact the insurance company or meet with the on campus representative if you have questions (see Insurance information)
- Be aware that RIT insurance may not cover the visit 100% and students are responsible for the difference
For students with non-RIT insurance:
- If you are from outside the Rochester area, check your insurance policy to confirm that you have coverage "out of network" (outside your home area)
- Check to see if you may be referred by a SHC provider or if you must be referred by your primary medical provider at home
- Review the specifics of coverage for your situation
