Judy Bernhart, Academic Coordinator

I was born in Cleveland, Ohio. I graduated from Cedarville College in Ohio (social sciences, music, religion) and the University of Chicago (education). Early teaching experience was in Ixmiquilpan, Hidalgo, Mexico (grades 5-9) with the Instituto Linguistico de Verano. My interests include: the MBTI, pedagogy, history of Europe and the Americas, family, the English language, Go, nutrition and cooking, history of science and mathematics, vegetable gardening, questions from philosophy, science fiction and flower arranging.

My main responsibilities include:

  • Hiring, training and supervising 120 tutors
  • Matching tutors with tutor requests
  • Working individually with students in liberal arts courses and writing papers
  • Serving as a support specialist to a caseload of students

David Watson, Support Specialist

I have been fortunate to have had a career of over 28 years here at RIT. The students and their success are the most important reason for my being here. Away from RIT, I enjoy being with friends and family; and building, designing and flying kites of all sizes and shapes. Cooking and baking are other pastimes that I enjoy and share with others.

My main responsibilities include:

  • Serving as a support specialist for a large number of students in the program.
  • Monitoring and maintaining the program database.
  • Serving as liaison with Financial Aid, Registrar's Office and Advisor's Council, and staff resource on financial literacy issues.

Karen Quinn, Math Instructor

I have served as TRiO SSS's math instructor since 1983. I received my BA in Mathematics and Education from Carnegie Mellon University and my MA in Mathematics Curriculum from the University of Rochester where I also did some additional post-graduate work. I work hard with all students to capitalize on their strengths. In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, baking, and my grandchildren. I have also picked up playing the cello again after a long hiatus.

My main responsibilities include:

  • Providing individualized math support in any math course.
  • Conducting math assessment and diagnostic teaching.
  • Conduct workshops, tutor training, and individual and group study sessions.
  • Serving as a support specialist to a caseload of students.

Bernadette Lynch, Director

I have had the privilege of serving RIT students in a variety of roles since 1992. I graduated from Canisius College with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting and my Master's is from Indiana University. I enjoy all aspects of my position and look forward to seeing students successfully graduate and go out and mark their mark in the world. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family and great friends. I have 2 sons and am active in their school and their extracurricular activities. I also love to read, make cards and scrapbooks, and hang with my dog.

My main responsibilities include:

  • Supervise staff and provide the overall direction for the program.
  • Implement and evaluate program activities.
  • Assess on-going needs of student populations and develop creative ways to meet these needs.
  • Serve as a support specialist to a caseload of students.

Kris Shamp

I was born and raised in Chili, NY and still reside there. I am married and have two teenage children, one who will be an RIT student soon. I thoroughly enjoy all the students I work with at RIT. I have made some amazing friends as well and will continue to do so. I enjoy reading, working out, and spending time with family and friends.

My main responsibilities include:

  • Oversee front desk reception area including student staff (hiring and supervising)
  • Coordinating all tutor paperwork
  • Take minutes for the TRiO SSS Advisory Board

Beth Caito, Program and Financial Assistant

I have worked at RIT for 17 years. I truly enjoy all aspects of my position but especially enjoy student contact. When I'm not at RIT, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have a son who is active playing baseball and soccer and a daughter who enjoys dancing and being a Girl Scout. In addition to family, I love to read, cook/bake and crafts of any kind.

My main responsibilities include:

  • Reconcile monthly financial expenditures.
  • Provide budget support to the Director.
  • Assist with publications and special events.
