Self-esteem refers to the value you assign to yourself, the way you see yourself and the importance you place on your position in the world.
How you feel about yourself is important. Not only does healthy self-esteem determine how well you treat yourself, but also the treatment you accept from others.
People with healthy self-esteem tend to surround themselves with healthy, worth-while relationships that impact their lives in a positive way.
Low self-esteem impacts your ability to build relationships that will be meaningful and rewarding. The Center for Women and Gender can help you identify ways to improve self-esteem and feel better about yourself and your relationships with others.
Assertiveness and Self-Esteem go hand in hand.
Assertiveness refers to the ability to stand up for yourself while respecting others. Setting boundaries and limits is easier when you are assertive in the beginning of a relationship. Unfortunately, assertiveness isn’t always taught to us when we are growing up. In some cases, we are even encouraged not to assert ourselves in our families of origin.
Learning to be assertive will help you in your personal relationships and in the academic and working worlds.
