Welcome to the Institute Advising Office!
We are dedicated to helping all RIT students explore and identify alternative majors/programs. The Institute Advising Office provides sound, objective information about RIT's undergraduate programs. We support all phases in the internal transfer process, from preliminary information-gathering to facilitating the actual transfer process.
Are You Considering a Change of Program?
You probably have a lot of questions. The Institute Advising Office works with students to help identify appropriate majors and careers. We make sure students are aware of services on campus, and often refer students to colleagues in other departments, such as RIT's career counselors. The Institute Advising Office also works closely with each of the academic departments at RIT. Students leave our office with a detailed checklist of contacts and resources to help ensure informed decision-making.
The Institute Advising Office can:
- Provide information about programs at RIT
- Help navigate a change of major/program at RIT
- Assist with preparation to transfer into another college or university
- Assist students with reapplication to RIT
- Advise a student about possible GPA Recalculation in a new major.

If you decide to schedule an appointment, the following guidelines may help you to prepare:
- Be sure that you are knowledgeable about RIT majors. Read the Undergraduate Bulletin to learn more about other majors and what their programs entail. Ideally, you should be able to express your reasons for changing your major and discuss one or more majors of interest.
- Be prepared for your meeting. Bring copies of any paperwork that you think will be helpful or relevant, such as career interest inventories or questionnaires that indicate your preferences.
- If you have been referred to the Institute Advising Office, please ask the person who referred you to contact us with a brief explanation of your needs.
- Please arrive on time; your first appointment you will be asked to complete an Intake Form. This will be helpful during your appointment.
