Ask Ellen Shady if she’s read any good books lately and she could respond with the title of a New York Times best seller or that of an award-winning picture book. You see, as the mother of Daniel, 6, and Jane, 4, Ellen reads for pleasure and for the pleasure of her children.
She also reads for a living. In fact, scanning text is something Ellen has done the majority of her working life. After graduating from SUNY Geneseo with a B.A. in English lit, she landed a job with Lawyers Cooperative Publishing (now West Group), proofreading law journals and the like. Over the years she has tackled proofing and print production assignments for a number of advertising agencies in Chicago and Rochester—not to mention our own UPub office. (This is Ellen’s second stint with RIT and University Publications.)
Ellen’s interests outside of work include knitting and participation on the board of Love the Children, an adoption agency that brought her and her husband together with their kids. She helps the group arrange for guest speakers, shares her experiences with new parents and—what else—reviews books pertinent to young adoptees and their families.
