The Learning Support Services Department offers a fee-based program called Structured Monitoring. In Structured Monitoring, a Learning Specialist monitors students' academic progress throughout the quarter. Students who request this additional academic support may sign up for structured monitoring on a quarterly basis (once a week, twice a week, or daily). Throughout the quarter, students are encouraged to become aware of their own strengths, to find ways to compensate for their weaknesses, and become increasingly independent at the college level.

HOW does Structured Monitoring work?
Students in the program are assigned to Learning Support Specialists, who are familiar with the Institute and with the implications of learning differences. During regularly scheduled meetings, or "check-ins", the student and the Learning Support Specialist review assignments and campus resources, create a 10-week calendar, and set up a color-coded organizational system. Students are encouraged to advocate with professors, and to use a variety of academic services. Students leave every check-in with a "to-do" sheet identifying credit course assignments to complete for the next session. At mid-quarter, faculty are contacted for progress reports.

HOW does Structured Monitoring differ from other transition or support programs?
All students in Structured Monitoring have been accepted into an RIT college or program. The choice of participating in Structured Monitoring is not a condition of acceptance, nor is it necessarily an indication of uncertainty of major. Although many students with disabilities choose to participate in the program, documentation of a disability is NOT a requirement for enrollment in Structured Monitoring. Several non-credit classes and workshops on study strategies are offered to all RIT students; however, they cannot provide the continuing one-on-one individual attention to a student's unique learning situation. Students may enroll in Structured Monitoring at any point in their academic career.

WHY does Structured Monitoring have such a dramatic impact on students' performance?
Several reasons. First, research tells us that a close connection with faculty, staff, and peers is a major factor in student success. Second, the Learning Support Specialists are attuned to both the demands of RIT and the needs of their students. They can help a student direct time and energy in the most productive manner, avoiding common pitfalls and barriers. Third, many students who have had academic support in high school are not aware of or ready for the shift in responsibility from the school to the individual.

Structured Monitoring Fee Schedule:

• LEVEL 1 - meets once per week - $440 per quarter
• LEVEL 2 - meets two times per week - $880 per quarter
• LEVEL 3 - meets three to five times per week - $950 per quarter
