How NTID created Smart Classrooms - Fall/Winter, 1998/99

UPDATED 1/7/1999

In the spring of 1997, during his "State of the Institute Address", Dr. Robert Davila (Director of NTID) announced that funds will be committed to install additional high-tech instructional delivery equipment at NTID.

As part of that commitment, NTID Dean James DeCaro created a "Classroom Renovation Task Force".

Dr. Davila has appointed Al Smith, Director of the Center for Institutional Services, to oversee the renovation and outfitting of smart general purpose classrooms within NTID facilities. A $155,000 grant has been pledged to fund this project.

Key tasks and timetable

LBJ-1470 was outfitted with full capabilities (as outlined below).

LBJ-2590 will be renovated with full capabilities (as outlined below) to be a new large meeting room by Spring 983 (3/1999).

Spec's for outfitting other general purpose classrooms with less than full capabilities (see below) have been developed; thus maximizing the resources over as many spaces as possible. It was determined that additional spaces can be renovated to less than full capability based on the budget & specs: LBJ-1520, 1530, 3233, 3237, 3635, 3643 & 3645.

To extend resources to outfit as many rooms as possible, the configuration of the equipment in 1470, 1520 & 1530 will be similar to the existing smart classroom in 1480 (all source components located in a moveable cart)... see rear-projection illustration above.

Installation of all components will be done by in-house technicians.

A portion of the grant will be reserved for outfitting three of the five general purpose classrooms scheduled to be created during the summer of 1999 and ready for service by Fall 991 (9/1999).

A list of equipment makes/models to outfit classrooms (as per the list below) was completed in July, 1998.

Requests for bids on the equipment were sent out by 7/10/1998.

The orders for the components for LBJ-1470, 1520, 1530, 3233, 3237, 3635, 3643 & 3645 were sent out by mid-August, 1998.

LBJ-1510 will be outfitted with a ceiling-mounted LCD projector, a VCR, a document camera, a lectern & inputs for a brought-in PC or Mac laptop (funded via the regular equipment process).

Due to a requirement of the Parsons Foundation, all of the equipment to be funded had to be ordered by mid-August, 1998. Therefore, the orders for the components for LBJ-2590, LBJ-3233 & 3237, and the 3 additional classrooms were sent out by the end of August.

The wiring infrastructure to LBJ-1520, 1530, 3635, 3643, & 3645 was completed by 9/3/1998. LBJ-1470 wiring was done last year and LBJ-2590 will be done as soon as the west wall has been relocated.

The installation of the major presentation components for LBJ-1470, 1520, 1530, 3635, 3643, and 3645 was completed by the first week of classes for Winter quarter 982 (11/30/1998).

The installation of the infrared emitters, the telephones/TTY's, the lock-boxes to keep accessories in and the remainder of the ethernet jacks is expected to be completed in early 1999. Once the lock boxes are installed, the microphone, wireless transmitter, and infrared receivers (if requested) will be stored in the box. Faculty who wish to use these accessories will be issued a key to the lock boxes on a quarterly basis.

The equipment for the 3 additional classrooms has been put in storage pending a decision on where it will be installed.

The Net Result

By the end of academic year 1998-99, the following smart spaces will be in service:

LBJ-1450 *LBJ-1460 *LBJ-1470 *LBJ-1480 *LBJ-1510 *LBJ-1520 *LBJ-1530 *LBJ-2470*
LBJ-2590 *LBJ-3635*LBJ-3643*LBJ-3645
