BS/MS in Safety Technology and Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Management Program

An accelerated 5 year BS/MS dual degree program is available for outstanding students currently enrolled in the Safety Technology BS degree program.  The BS/MS dual degree program combines two existing programs, the 5 year BS degree in Safety Technology and the 4 quarter MS degree in Environmental, Health and Safety Management, into one 5 year program.  The program also includes three co-op quarters with at least one quarter of co-op providing EHS experience in an industrial setting.  Students in the BS/MS program will be awarded both the BS degree in Safety Technology and the MS degree in Environmental, Health and Safety Management at the end of the program after they have successfully completed all of the BS/MS program requirements.

Eligibility

Students currently enrolled in the BS degree program in Safety Technology who have completed the equivalent of four quarters of study and who have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 are eligible to enter the BS/MS program.  Students who are interested should discuss the degree program with their advisor during their first year of study and should start the application process in the fall of their second year.  Students may not apply to the program after the winter quarter of their fourth year.

To apply:

  • Write a one page personal statement explaining why you want to enter the dual degree program.
  • Complete a BS/MS dual degree program application.
  • Present the completed application and your personal statement to your advisor for approval.
  • Your advisor will verify that you are eligible to apply to the program and will forward your materials to EMS faculty for review and approval.
  • If accepted, you must initiate a change of program form for the new BS/MS program code. (IEMM)
  • After the completion of the 193 credit hours the code will be changed to the MS degree program code. (IEMH)

Once enrolled in the BS/MS degree program, a student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, or the student will be transferred back to the BS degree program.  If the student is transferred back to the BS degree program, then that student must complete the requirements for the BS degree program as they are at the time of the transfer in order to receive a degree.

Tuition

Tuition for the program will be at the undergraduate rate for up to 193 quarter credit hours which is the number of quarter credit hours required to complete the existing Environmental Management and Technology BS degree program. Tuition for credits hours beyond 194 will be at the graduate rate.
