Environmental Management & Technology
Welcome
This baccalaureate degree
program prepares its graduates to work as environmental project
managers and program managers both in industry and in government.
Students gain a strong foundation in science and applied environmental
science and are provided with the basic tools of financial management,
team building and leadership. They learn the applicable environmental
laws, regulations and the appropriate technologies for protecting
air, water and land resources. They are ready to eliminate, reduce
and control releases of pollutants into the environment. The BS
program was developed and is governed by an advisory committee of
successful environmental professionals and employers.
In its 1997 report, GLOBAL
ENVIRONMENT OUTLOOK, the United Nations Environment Programme concludes
that, "during the past decade, the environment has continued
to degrade and significant problems still persist." It charges
that "the pace at which the world is moving toward a sustainable
future is simply too slow." Society is beginning to realize
that environmental resources are finite, valuable and must not be
used at a rate faster than that at which they can be replenished
naturally. The question is, how do we change our resource-intensive
systems of production and consumption toward that end? Answering
this question is, in part, the job of the Environmental Manager.
It's a big job for sure, but while some of what we need to do in
pursuit of a sustainable future will take lots of time, involve
research and require new knowledge, most of it involves caring about
the environment, using common sense to prevent pollution from occurring
in the first place, and considering the impacts of everything we
do.
There Is Much To Be Done
RIT's BS degree program
in Environmental Management & Technology prepares students to
move the organizations in which they work toward sustainability.
Since the concept is so new, there is much to be done. Activities
range from simple tasks like keeping contaminated wastewater separated
from clean water (you'd be surprised at how many people haven't
thought of doing this) to helping determine how a product can be
manufactured using less energy or without using toxic materials.
Make a Difference Right
Away
The most rewarding aspect
of an Environmental Management & Technology career is that you
can start making a difference right away. There is just so much
that can be done at every level of effort that you'll feel good
about your contribution from the first day on the job. And, you
don't have to wait until graduation to begin helping the environment!
Environmental Management & Technology students start their first
Co-op jobs in the spring of their third year. Our Co-op students
are especially helpful to the organizations for which they work
because they are qualified and ready to take on some of the many
environmental projects that the organizations seem never to have
the time to otherwise get done
.
