- RIT Creates First-of-its-Kind College in Computing
and Information Sciences
Thanks to a recent gift by B. Thomas Golisano, founder and
CEO of Paychex, Inc., RIT launched a new College of Computing
and Information Sciences, which will be home to RITs
departments of Computer Science, Information Technology,
and Software Engineering. The new Golisano College of Computing
and Information Sciences at RIT is believed to be the largest
and most complete computing college in the country. Plans
are being developed for a 90,000-square-foot building to
house the new college. Its education and research facilities
will feature smart classrooms, state-of-the-art computing
laboratories, student interactive spaces, and much more.
- RIT Completes multi-million dollar renovation to Residence
Halls
The final stage of a $50 million residence hall renovation
was completed this year providing the latest innovations
in student housing. The renovations enhance the entire residential
environment. Each room, each floor, even each building has
been redesigned with an emphasis on comfort, safety and
ease of access to the newest technologies. The campus network
and the Internet can be accessed from all residence halls
by direct, high-speed Ethernet connections, accessing the
internet through an OC3 connection, which is approximately
3 times faster than the speed of a T3.
- Rochester Marriott Thruway Hotel given to RIT by Del
Monte Corp.
The generous gift of the Rochester Marriott Thruway hotel
and property on West Henrietta Road by E.J. Del Monte Corp.
to RIT is the third contribution valued at $14 million that
the university has received since February. More than 300
RIT upper-level undergraduate and graduate students will
reside in double premium quality rooms at the facility.
The university will provide regular shuttle bus service
to and from the inn and its Jefferson Road campus three
miles away.
- New York State Gives funding for New STAR Center;
To be Known as the IT Collaboratory
In an extremely competitive New York state selection process,
RIT has come out a winner. In May 2001, Gov. George Pataki
announced the making of a new STAR (strategically targeted
academic research) Center at RIT. NYSTAR will fund the center
with $14 million. The Information Technology Collaboratory
will focus on four areas of research: microsystems, photonic
systems, remote systems and high-bandwidth telecom networks.
- New Fraternity and Sorority housing
Six Fraternities and sororities at RIT move into a new free
standing housing development starting this fall. This project
is a positive one for the RIT Greek community in general,
it will allow for RIT's fraternity and sorority members
to develop a more unique presence on campus as well as making
more efficient use of space on campus in these beautiful
new accommodations.
- RIT Awards First-in-the-Nation Software Engineering
Degrees
The 2001 commencement at RIT marked a special milestone
for the university. A group of 12 graduating students become
the first in the United States to earn bachelors degrees
in software engineering
- New Public Policy Degree Program
RITs Public Policy program offers several unique features
including an accelerated five year BS/MS option, an applied
focus, and a choice of specializations. This program provides
an interdisciplinary education that includes economics,
history, political science, philosophy, and sociology. Students
at RIT will examine society-shaping issues ranging from
Internet privacy and technology access to genetic engineering
and global warming.
