| Project Title: Language and Literacy Course Materials | |
| Key Words: | |
| Project Description:
I propose to develop a home page that will serve as a resource for students of language learning and literacy development. In the one-week ITC Studio on the WWW in May 1999, I hope to create a home page that will include syllabi, topic outlines, lists of reference materials, journal articles, student writing samples (permission to publish granted) multimedia, and links to other sites. I will use the home page for the graduate course, English Language Development, that I teach in September for the NTID/RIT Masters of Science in Secondary Education Program. I expect that the home page will improve students' access to course materials and to me. In addition, I plan to use the home page to support a guest professorship at Martin Luther University, Halle, Germany in June, 1999. There, I will use my home page to introduce future special education teachers and clinicians to resources on deafness and education. Project Update:

| Key Words: | |
| Project Description:
Revise ACT Website as Faculty-Student Communication Tool. The ACT Department website was created three-four years ago, and since its initial creation has had almost no updating. As a result, it does not function well as a communication tool intended to be useful for ACT faculty, for students, and for others who want to communicate with ACT faculty and students. The site also does not reflect the advances that have occurred during recent years in terms of web technology. This project will update that site, with the intention of creating a site that is useful on a daily basis for enhancing communication between the audiences mentioned above. To accomplish these updates, Microsoft Frontpage will be studied and will be used to recreate the site, using the advanced features of that product, always with an eye to enhanced communication. | Project Description:
I have been teaching Career Decision-Making for the past five years. I teach four sections of this course to approximately 55-60 students each year. I would like to make the course more visual by developing visual materials and using power point in my presentations. It would be great if I could learn how to incorporate the CAI and DISCOVER software into my presentations. Students would be able to analyze all the career information and test results and process the information using the career decision making model to identify a career that best meets their needs. I would also like to learn how to use information on the WWW to add to the course content. I believe students learn best if faculty lectures are more visual and interesting. Project Update:

The Department of Science and Engineering's home page was created five years ago and needs to be reworked. I will join Theresa White and Jane Jackson in updating the DSES home page that will provide deaf and hearing students information and resources in science and engineering as well as the Deaf culture. The home page will be placed within the CBGS web. It will link to useful resources, which the students who could use to improve their study and time management skills, and to improve their understanding of fundamentals in science and engineering. It can serve as a recruiting tool for high school juniors and seniors considering careers in science and engineering. One potential of the DSES website is to open another avenue of tutoring for students who are becoming more computer-savvy than previous students. Project Update:

My project is to begin developing a website to share information about graphic design, intended to supplement classroom activities and experiences. It will incorporate: materials I develop in the course of tutoring design students (how-to s, tips and hints, vocabulary and definitions, exercises) and resources (a reference to articles and books, and an inventory of events, professional organizations, materials, and on-line resources as well as interactive examples). The website also can be a center where student contributions will serve as additional resources and examples. After an initial phase and trial, it would be nice to structure the site as a searchable database. With the addition of student work, this site could be used to show (remote) prospective students examples of completed design assignments. Project Update:

The Internet is today's hot topic and almost everyone I know is using it. I have used it intermittently, but I would like to use it on a continuous basis for the courses I will be teaching next year. I would like to learn how to use the Internet as a research tool for the new courses entitled "Writing and Literature I and II." These two courses are an introduction to the major characteristics and concepts of argumentation and genres of literature. I would like to learn ways to find appropriate links to web sites and use them to encourage students to maintain critical reading and analytic skills for writing original and profound essay assignments about current social issues as well as topics found in literature. | Project Title: Notes on Sociology
| Key Words: | |
| Project Description:
Objective: To develop a series of teacher's notes and commentary on the issues and topics within Foundations of Sociology with links to other resources available on the Web. Rationale: Sociology texts and materials are usually written in a manner which in not especially accessible to Deaf students. Sometimes examples need to be grounded in Deaf Culture. Other times, there are taken for granted assumptions on the part of the textbook authors which require explanation. Such things tend to occur repeatedly and can thus be anticipated in a set of teacher's notes. Othertimes there are issues which come up in class which need to have additional, in-depth explanations as quickly as possible. Development of such notes which could be added to easily and readily available to students via computer would free up valuable class time for face to face interaction and group discussion without as much instructor concerns for "covering the topic. "Priori ty: Foundations of Sociology is one of a limited number of direct service courses available to Deaf students that satisfy Liberal Arts Graduation Requirements for the AAS degree. New textbooks and other materials have necessitated revisions and updating of course materials. This would be an opportune time to implement new technology as part of the course delivery plan. | Key Words:
| Project Description:
In this ITC studio, I am looking forward to developing the skills necessary to create and maintain a Web page to interact with students in the following venues.1) Deaf and hearing students enrolled in electrical engineering courses I teach through CAST will be able to download circuit drawings and homework solutions via my web page, as well as connect to related engineering links providing further information for their studies.2) I will be teaching our department's Freshman Seminar course, and would like to have as many course materials as possible available on the Web. This is not only a useful way of sharing information and course projects with our new students, but will also teach them the vital browsing and downloading tools necessary to keep up with homework and projects (most engineering faculty maintain Web sites where students are required to download assignments, etc.).3) I hope to develop a better understanding of how to create and maintain effective teaching tools using the Web. In particular, I would like to learn more about using visual-based and interactive teaching materials (vs. the written word) to take full advantage of the Web's capabilities in teaching our students.4) As my department's official computer liaison with ISC, it is my responsibility to upgrade my computer skills so that I may continue to serve in that capacity. My knowledge and understanding of Web page development will help to further my department's efforts to develop and maintain a DSES Web page. Project Update:

| Project Title: Interactive opportunity to prepare for job interviewing | |
| Key Words: | |
| Project Description:
Students preparing for their first job interview are often not familiar with the types of questions frequently asked on an interview and could benefit from some practice becoming familiar with the vocabulary used, the underlying reasons for the questions and in formulating their answers. For these reasons, the communication faculty are collaborative instructors in the CTS Job Search Course. Currently, we have an old DOS computerized interview available in NITD's Learning Center which allows instructors to provide feedback to students on their responses to questions. This was developed by the late Dr. Lictenstein and has not been updated in several years. It has become particularly problematic this year because many of the majors changed their names. Rather than attempting to revised this outdated program, I would like to develop an online opportunity for students to interact with the instructors of job s earch and each other relating to this topic. While this would be an outside assignment for students in the Job Search course, it might also be open to other interested students. Project Update:

I would like to develop some aspects of the current Freshmen Art Seminar course into an on-line format. I want freshmen to become familiar and comfortable with the technology. I hope to have some class assignments that students would access on-line, and also be able to interact with each other on-line. The computer graphics/graphic design field has become increasingly dependent on the computer for communications and training as well as a tool for the creation and production of art. Though the Freshmen Art Seminar course is not "technical" by nature it requires students to develop some initiative and work towards becoming more of a self-generated learner. | Project Title: Science Careers for Deaf Students: On-line School Visits
| Key Words: | |
| Project Description:
Over the past two years, I have visited five schools for the deaf and presented a slide show about deaf women and men in science careers. After each visit, the students respond to two questions: 1) what have you learned about the contributions of deaf men and women in science? and 2) are you interested in science as a possible career? The purpose of these visits is to raise expectations, increase motivation, and enhance positive self esteem in young deaf people. The results have shown promise not only for accomplishing these goals, but also in encouraging students to think about NTID as a college to attend. I would like to develop skills and a prototype on-line course, approximately one-hour long, that will allow me to link to a school or class and share some of the slide show (on the Web) and interact electronically with the students, through text, graphics, and video options. After completing the ITC course, I will b uild upon the prototype, including the evaluation components. Project Update:

| Key Words: | |
| Project Description:
With the incorporation of the AOS in most program areas as well as the new CAS English requirements, there is significant confusion and misunderstanding on the part of the students (some of us as well...) regarding graduation requirements and courses required in the various programs. In the ACT program, there are 3 different program masks (depending on entry term) depicting 9 different degree options. Academic advising continues to consume more time in counselors schedules, detracting from addressing more relevant issues related to degree completion and personal growth/development. I would like to create a web based academic advisment checklist that will automatically show the correct sequence of technical courses and depict a suggested layout for future quarters. Criteria from the 3 different program masks would have to established in a database, or some other vehicle that can cross check students completed courses and determine the next course of ac tion. This is 'rough' and at the conceptual level, and more refinement of the project will occur as I begin the task. I would like to discuss the possibilities further. I am assuming this would fit either the www or the online strand...whichever seems more appropriate. Mark Rosica Project Update:

| Key Words: | |
| Project Description:
This quarter I am on leave of absence to develop fiber optic cable curriculum and materials. A laboratory has been set up for this purpose. At the beginning of the course, scientific principles of light transmission would need to be iterated in some detail to prepare students for handling the technical aspects of fiber optics such as installation, connectorization, splicing, and field testing to meet industry-wide specifications. Although I am using text and illustrations to portray such scientific principles, I would prefer something more dynamic, like a moving sequence of light through a tube to illustrate the concept of wavelengths and their movement rate through various fiber media. Secondly, I would like to put up on a web page the common dimensions and tables used in fiber optics for quick, instant reference to determine if a test meets standards. This would eliminate constant reference to books or paper sheets which, out in the field, could become awkward to handle and carry. Also, I would like to incorporate illustrations of various common connectors used in the handling of fiber cable and examples of On-Time-Domain-Reflectometer graphs with explanations of salient points in the graph. As the course progresses through several quarters, there would be some time to reflect on students' progress through the course and to adjust web materials to assist the next group of students better. Long-range possibilities would be to insert excerpts of the questions used in the national certification of fiber optic installers by the National Association of Communication Contractors. Addressing the needs of the students in a more visually impacting method in the Business Occupations Department and the general business courses, makes the ITC project opportunity a must for continuing the home page that was developed in 1997. As part of my plan of work, placing all the general business courses on the home page is a realistic goal. The students will be able to access information relative to the class (work that is usually handed out) through www. Instruction online will enhance students receiving syllabi, handouts, questions/answers, and tests. The instructional materials in the general business courses, which are language based, can become more visually based with the addition of PowerPoint presentations appropriately prepared. Since students are enthusiastic about careers in business or entrepreneurship but lack the requisite language and communication competencies, the addition of acquisiting especially the vocabulary visually will make this learning process easier for them.
