"Faculty in the ASC are approachable, friendly, and extremely competent in their areas of expertise"
The Academic Support Center provides services for all RIT and RIT/NTID supported Baccalaureate and Graduate degree-seeking students. Any NTID students enrolled in an associate’s degree program such as NTID’s AAS, AOS or AA program should first seek academic support from NTID’s Counseling and Academic Advising Services office.
"YES" to any of these questions? Come to the Bates Study Center or Sol Study Center.
The Bates and Sol Study Centers each provide free, drop-in math and physics tutoring. All tutors can help with algebra, trigonometry and calculus courses. Many tutors are engineering students and will help with any level of physics. Other tutors are proficient in higher level math classes. View and download the current quarter’s Tutor Schedule.
What you will find is a quiet study room staffed by peer tutors wearing brightly colored tutor t-shirts and periodically by math professors as well. Students with math and/or physics questions can come on a drop-in basis; no appointments or referrals are necessary.
Math and physics tutors can help with questions from homework, lecture notes, textbooks, practice quizzes, and practice tests. The tutors can’t help with take-home tests, take-home quizzes, or anything else that will be submitted for a quiz or test grade.
All tutors can help with algebra, trigonometry and calculus courses. Many tutors are engineering students and will help with any level of physics. Other tutors are proficient in Discrete math or Data Analysis. For a list of tutors, the hours they work, and the courses they tutor in, click on the Tutor Schedule. Math and physics tutoring is located in two different locations: (1)Gosnell Building houses the Bates Study Center and (2) Sol Heumann Residence Hall houses the Sol Study Center.
There are two tutoring locations.
The Bates Study Center is located on the first floor of the College of Science (Gosnell Building 08, Room 1200) in the building that the majority of your math and physics classes are held. It is open 24 hours, and tutors are available from Monday through Thursday 9am – 9pm and Friday 9am – 6pm. It is a large, active room with lots of space. You can find hard copies of all the math handouts there, plenty of white board space, textbooks to look at, pencils, scrap paper. All tutors can help with algebra, trigonometry and calculus courses, and others can help with higher level mathematics and physics.
The ASC knows that it is hard to live a quarter mile from the academic side of campus so we have provided a satellite study center for your convenience. The Sol Study Center is located on the first floor of the Sol Heumann Residence Hall (47-1016) and is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday evenings from 7pm - 10pm and Sunday 2pm - 5pm and 7pm - 10pm. This quiet, productive space can be used by any RIT student for any assignment during the posted hours. Additionally, math and physics tutors are available on a drop-in basis to work with and answer questions. Light refreshments are available for students using the Sol Study Center.
In general, the answer is “no.” The ASC does not normally provide any tutoring other than for math and physics. If you need help with another topic, though, you may stop by the Bates Study Center and a tutor can provide you with information as to when and where tutoring occurs for these other topics.
