Is there on-campus student housing?

Do I have to live in on-campus housing?

(Answer)

RIT offers a variety of university run housing options.  Freshman (first-year undergraduate students) is required to live in RIT residence halls unless they are living in the Rochester area with family members.  Second, third, fourth and fifth year undergraduate (upper class) students and graduate students may chose to live in a residence halls, a university-operated apartment (some of which are unfurnished), at the RIT Inn or off-campus. Information on all of the RIT housing choices is available at the following website: http://finweb.rit.edu/housing/

Students who choose to live off-campus generally find it necessary to purchase a car since there is limited public transportation to and from the RIT campus.  The university provides free bus transportation on campus and to and from the RIT Inn.

Where will I eat?

(Answer)

There are a wide variety of food service locations on campus and food may be obtained through a pre-purchased meal plan, Tiger Bucks or with cash. Students who live in residence halls and at the RIT Inn must purchase one of the meal plans provided by the RIT Food Service.

Information about the RIT Food Service including the cost of meal plans can be found at: http://finweb.rit.edu/foodservice

Students who live in apartments generally cook their own food although they often purchase some meals on campus.

Is there on-campus health care?

(Answer)

The Student Heath Center provides a wide variety of heath care services including comprehensive primary care, injection services and health education.  The staff (which are called “health care providers” in the US) includes physicians, nurse practitioners (trained nurses who have Master degrees) and trained nurses. The Student Health Center

staff will refer you to a local specialist if you need one.

The Student Health Center website is: http://www.rit.edu/~333www/

The Student Health Center fee is automatically billed quarterly to undergraduate students.  Graduate students may pay the quarterly fee or they may pay a fee each time they visit the Student Health Service. In addition to the Health Service fee, all international students are required to have comprehensive health insurance to pay for hospitalizations and other medical services not available on campus. RIT offers a Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan to all students.

The website is: http://www.rit.edu/%7E333www/insurance.html

All new students, undergraduate and graduate, must complete a health history form and are required by New York State to provide evidence of immunization against certain diseases.

That form is available at: http://www.rit.edu/%7E333www/immunizations.html

There is no infirmary on campus.  Students requiring hospitalization are sent to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.  This is the hospital of the University of Rochester Medical Center and is located five miles from RIT.  There is an RIT Ambulance Service for students who require ambulance transport to the hospital.
